Transparent .PNG Design Guidelines

A guide when designing for direct print processes using a transparent .PNG file format.

When designing for UV, DTFx, and DTG while using a transparent .PNG file format. Please note that these direct print methods typically use a white ink under base. As a result, achieving certain design techniques such as shifts in opacity, transparency, feathered edges, or non defined grainy patterns become very difficult to render once printed. Use these design techniques at your own risk. We've included a few do's and don'ts (below) to serve as a guide when planning to use transparent .PNG file format for any of these print processes.

Solid

Solid

Photographic images, color gradients are ok when enclosed in a defined border without texture applied.

Solid to Transparent

Solid to Transparent

Avoid feathering any portion of a design element.

Transparent

Transparent

Avoid shifts in opacity.

Grain Texture

Grain / Texture

Avoid hard to define, grainy texture patterns.
